Life is as Exciting as Your Wireless Name

I finally gave in and bought myself a Mac last weekend. First time ever.

My friend Ben and I braved the Christmas crowds on Regent Street and set out on a pilgrimage to the Apple Store.

When I get my mind set on something, I can decide pretty quickly. I just go into a shop, get the thing and go home. That’s what I wanted to do yesterday…. and I was finding the Apple Store guys in their red Santa-Clausy polo shirt slightly unnerving… If I hear another one say that they are not on commission…. I am going to scream!

Anyway, Ben and I made it back home (but only after buying myself a new pair of shoes on the way …oh well it’s Christmas!).

Ben started setting up my new Mac and…. that’s when I realised… that my life is probably more boring than I had ever thought.

How did I come to that realisation?

It was  my wireless network…. Its name is boring as hell: Virgin something and some numbers. According to wtfwifi.com, there are people out there with far more exciting names, which might also be indicators of what is going on in their lives…

Wtfwifi.com’s founder, Alexandra Janelli, began collecting wireless names while walking her dog around Manhattan. She told The New Yorker, “The more I started looking at it, the more I realised that it was really just a new form of media that people were using to express themselves”.

I’ve checked wtfwifi.com’s updates of the month and the ones I really love are “Trying to steal internet” and “Expensive Garbage Can”.

But my favourites are what The New Yorker calls “passive-aggressive messages to neighbours”: “Stop Cooking Indian!!!” or “We can hear you having sex”.

I like my neighbours… but I really want to get my wifi name on Janelli’s site. Stay tuned….

In the past, you would go to your apartment block neighbors to get some salt or matches. Nowadays, you could probably ask for a guest wifi access, choosing between the more appealing names.

I love this idea. Let us know what name you choose. Something passive aggressive? Uplifting? Wacky?

And put up a pic of your new Mac – my friends are divided into PC die hards (that’s me, too) and the Macs so it’s always fun to stir up the rivalry!
