Brokering Feelings for a Living

I don’t believe this video is only about the power of words. It is more about the feelings we attach to words.
Watch it and you will see… The woman who rewrote the sign stepped into the mind of people passing by and was able to imagine what they would feel by reading it.

In communication, we spend a lot of time searching for the right word. But what is most important is stepping into the psyche of our audience and figuring out how to make them feel what we want to say.

I often think that, more than anything else, we communicators are brokers of feelings.

    Change you words, change your world. Wow. That is so true not just for communication specialists but for each of us in our lives. In the past, when someone pushed into me (and this happens a lot in London esp on the tube!) I used to cry out, “Watch it!” and they would shout at me even though they were the one who had stepped into my personal boundary. Now I say, “Careful!” and their response is “Oh, sorry” – because they experience this different word as concern for them rather than an accusation. Change indeed!
